Home Health & Air Quality

Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) is ranked as one of the top five environmental risks to human health.

Most Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors. Yet, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies, levels for many pollutants may be two to five times higher indoors than outdoors.

Air quality and you

Common symptoms of exposure to indoor air pollutants include fatigue, headaches, nausea, scratchy throat, nasal irritation, and respiratory problems. Allergies and asthma are also on the rise. Airborne particles in your home such as dust mites, pollen, molds, pet dander, insect debris, bacteria, viruses, fungi, cigarette and wood smoke, lead dust and asbestos can trigger these health issues. People with chemical sensitivity can also experience similar symptoms when they are exposed to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in building materials, furniture, paints and solvents, household cleaners and fragrances. Airtight construction, designed to improve energy efficiency, permits less fresh air to enter the home so particles and VOCs build up over time.

Air quality and your home

In your home, heated, parched air causes separation of wood in floors, trim and furniture; excessive wear of fabrics and carpets; loss of piano tone quality; wall and ceiling cracks; plant damage; annoying static shocks; and high energy bills! Check out these stats:

  • Recommended Relative Humidity—35%
  • Sahara Desert— 25%
  • Death Valley— 23%
  • Average heated home— 13-16% (without humidification)

Know your home’s IAQ

Cahill takes your health very seriously. That’s why we are now offering a groundbreaking method to test Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). We will install a small IAQ monitor in your home for three days. The monitor works by transmitting air quality data through a toll-free phone number to an independent, third-party lab. The resulting, easy-to-read reports help you decide on the right filtration, ventilation and humidification solutions for your home.
